cannot connect to the database in sql server due to insufficient space for tempdb

My server is configured with alwayson. due to some unknown reason my tempdb in secondary server has occupied the complete disc space in the server which is about 56Gb. inorder to shrink the tempdb I tried to connect to the tempdb and I found that I am unable to connect any of the db's in it. I am getting the error as "could not allocate space for object tempdb because the primary filegroup is full". All I could do is restart the server, but since it is a production server I couldnt decide by myself.
