Why does TypeScript have so many issues on Github?

So I'm a latecomer to using TypeScript and after some experimentation I definitely see the benefits.

But I'm hesitant after checking their Github repo (2400 issues, 800+ active bugs). It seems excessively high. To be fair, a lot of the bugs are responded to in some way.

In software engineering, when deciding to use an open source library, especially one that's popular, how much weight should an issue count carry?
