IIS virtual directory in a local network using vmware ESX

We have two windows server 2012 on separate virtual machine, one for our web server that website is running on it and another for FTP server for saving large size files on it. These two servers are networked in a vmware ESX. We connected our website to FTP server using IIS virtual directory and we saved path of files in database like this:

/VD1/files/examle.zip // VD1 is virtual directory

My questions are simple. When a user requests to download a file, what happens?

  • Web server read files from FTP server and send it for user? Or something else?
  • How to send file directly to user from ftp server? should we change the way of saving path in database ? something like http://ftpExternalIp/files/example.zip?

What is the best practice for having such a system?
