Device freezes on login after installing nvidia drivers on notebook with hybrid graphics

There are various threads related to this problem but none of them had this specific problem. These are my laptop's(HP probook x360 440 g1) video cards:

Intel(R) UHD Graphics 620
NVIDIA GeForce MX130

I have ubuntu 18.04 LTS installed.

After installing the nvidia driver ver.396 using the command sudo apt-get install nvidia-driver-396 the system freezes after login screen. Desktop is not displayed. This problem gets fixed when I uninstall the nvidia drivers and switch to default driver. But I need to install the nvidia diver as I have to use CUDA.

I have come across blogs where the suggested solution to this problem is disabling on-board graphics from BIOS but in the hardware graphics section there are only two options:

Hybrid graphics
UMA graphics

UMA is basically on-board graphics. There is no option to use just the dedicated graphics.

So is there a way to install nvidia drivers properly without causing the screen freeze error?
