Lat long point to XY conversion

New here and this is my first question so I hope don't make a fool out of myself.

I need to convert lat long point coordinates to xy in QGIS. I have pounded the internet and tried everything I could find. The most straight forward solution (which would be ideal if it actually worked) was to import the csv lat long points, save to shp, open and add new column for $x $y. This should populate with the xy coordinates and everyone celebrates.

Unfortunately I had no luck there on qgis v2.14, 218, 2.99 on Windows or 2.14 on Linux.

I tried the solution which is a variation of the above using the xy tools plugin with no success either.

I can only assume I'm making some really rookie mistake here. If anyone could offer some guidance I would greatly appreciate it!
