Beginners don’t need complex SLR’s (single lens reflex) or mirrorless. Most any of the advanced point-and-shoots will do the trick. In fact, even if you have deep pockets and select a top of the line camera, you will surely set it to operate in “automatic” mode. This allows you make great pictures however they won’t be much improved over a moderately priced point & shoot. I am no beginner and I carry a point & shoot because I want a camera with me at all times and I don’t want to lug around a brute of a camera.

Today’s point & shoot’s deliver! Take a look at the Panasonic DMC-ZS60 for about $300 or the DMC-DS80. I carry a DMC-ZS40 and I love it.

While a top of the line SLR or mirrorless delivers top-notch images, their added ability is likely lost on a beginner plus, if you only look at your work on a computer screen only make prints below 16 X 20 inches, you likely will see no benefit having spent the extra money.
