mirror modifier for vertex group

I'm making a car base model to build all my future cars from, so can't apply my mirror modifier because I want to be able to mirror all changes to the exterior, but obviously the interior of cars are asymmetrical, so is it possible to have a mirror modifier only apply to a chosen vertex group, or will i just have to make the dash board a separate object?
